The BBC is among those to use it to share some of its open source code.
Word on the street is that Microsoft has been talking to GitHub, the famous code repository company that so many developers use on a regular basis, about a potential purchase. The 10-year-old GitHub, which is based in San Fransisco, is a platform for 27 million developers and hosts 80 million repositories of code.
Update: Microsoft has now confirmed its acquisition of Github in an all-stock deal worth $7.5 billion.
"Microsoft is a developer-first company, and by joining forces with GitHub we strengthen our commitment to developer freedom, openness and innovation", said Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft. The free open-source operating system was once called a "cancer" and the single largest threat to Windows. The firm has been a major player in the open-source software movement. The startup has made a name for itself as a place where developers learn, share and work together to create new software.
Microsoft has been extremely skeptical of open-source in the past, as it directly threatens their proprietary technology, but it seems the company is now making the shift to try and keep up with everyone else.
Not so, says Wanstrath: "Skepticism is totally understandable, but we're on the right path".
Lions, tigers, jaguar escape German zoo
Eifel Zoo has nearly 400 animals of 60 exotic and native species, including lions, tigers, and other big cats on its 30-acre site. The Eifel zoo, owned by the Wallpott family, is home to around 400 animals, also including a Siberian tiger.
Moody's analyst Richard Lane said the deal reflects Microsoft's "ongoing pivot to open source software, seeking to further broaden its large and growing development community".
GitHub's co-founder and current CEO, Chris Wanstrath, will join Microsoft as a technical fellow to work on software initiatives.
Microsoft Corporation is set to announce an acquisition of GitHub Inc. on Monday, according to Bloomberg. The short version: GitHub will maintain its independence as a wholly owned subsidiary but have access to Microsoft's prowess in engineering and sales.
"It's a logical and rational step for Microsoft", she said.
In April, Microsoft reported that its earnings rose 35 percent to $7.4 billion in the fiscal third quarter, with revenue up 16 percent to $26.8 billion. Many other tech giants, such as Apple, Amazon, Google, IBM and NASA, also use GitHub for sharing and collaborating on code. One person familiar with the situation explained that this evolved into a discussion around an acquisition, giving Microsoft nearly direct access to the knowledge of 27 million software developers and 80 million repositories of code.
