Marise Payne says the government is cautiously optimistic about the talks on June 12 between North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump in Singapore.
Syria and North Korea have been accused of co-operating on chemical weapons, but both deny the accusations.
Yesterday morning, the President tweeted, "Meeting in Singapore with North Korea will hopefully be the start of something big...we will soon see!"
After the meeting, Mr Trump said Kim Jong-un was committed to denuclearisation, and that the letter was "a very nice letter, a very interesting letter".
"We feel like things are continuing to move forward and good progress has been made", Sanders said.
