Calls to eliminate the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, for years relegated to the far-left corners of progressive activism, have been thrust this week into the mainstream of Democratic politics. Some are even pressing for the outright abolition of the federal government's chief immigration enforcement agency.
Though many who show up to the rallies across the country will be seasoned anti-Trump demonstrators, others are new to immigration activism, including parents who say they feel compelled to show up after heart-wrenching accounts of children forcibly taken from their families as they crossed the border illegally. Bernie Sanders, who sought the Democratic nomination in 2016 and is mulling another run, has stopped short of calls to dismantle ICE, but he notes his opposition to legislation that led to creating the force.
