Vern Unsworth, who played a significant role in the rescue efforts, wasn't particularly impressed with Musk's offer to help out and said, "He can stick his submarine where it hurts".

Musk attacked Vernon Unsworth, who helped in the rescue mission that saved 12 boys and their soccer coach from a flooding Thai cave.

But Mr Unsworth, who was instrumental in rescuing the school football team, said the vessel the SpaceX boss invented "had absolutely no chance of working" because the inventor "had no conception of what the cave passage was like".

That was enough for Musk to throw a Twitter tantrum, in which he not only questioned Unsworth's knowledge, he said he never even saw Unsworth in the cave, implying he wasn't really all that important to the rescue.

"You are literally such a douchebag to go after that cave diver like that", commented Instagram user alexapersian on one of Musk's Instagram posts. The submarine, I believe, was about 5-foot-6 long, rigid, so it wouldn't have gone around corners, gone around any obstacles.

A British diver involved in the Thai cave rescue mission has indicated he could sue Elon Musk for defamatory comments. Lashing out and calling a guy who was actually part of the rescue operation in a measurable way a pedophile is probably not a great move! Unsworth had also stated in a column on Mediate, that he felt it was a publicity stunt for Musk because he had to know it wouldn't work.

He said he holds both countries responsible for election interference and called the Robert Mueller probe "a disaster for our country".

Musk was intensely criticised on Twitter for the attack on Unsworth.

Musk first made an attempt to help them himself, though, by sending SpaceX and Boring Company engineers.

"We will make [a video] of the mini-sub going all the way to Cave 5 no problemo".

The Tesla CEO had traveled to Thailand earlier this week, touting his "mini-sub" that he said was built with rocket parts and could be carried by two divers.

There is no indication that Musk's statement is true, and he provided no justification or proof to back up his claim. "But when the head of the rescue operation, Narongsak Osottanakorn, declared that Mr Musk's contraption was impractical for the task at hand - a task that had been completed, at that point, by some of the world's top cave divers - Mr Musk responded with irritation", she wrote.
