The outgoing Florida attorney general, Pam Bondi has always been a Trump ally.
In an op-ed in August previous year he publicly urged Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein - who oversees the probe - to "limit the scope of his investigation to the four corners of the order appointing him special counsel".
"Congress must take immediate action to protect the rule of law and integrity of the investigation".
With Democrats grabbing control of the House of Representatives, Nadler will become the chairman of the Judiciary Committee - and could preside over impeachment proceedings against Trump. Trump never forgot it, and never forgave Sessions, whom he routinely derided from his perch on Twitter.
Later, Schumer tweeted that the new acting AG, Whitaker, should recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation.
The full implications Sessions' exit may have on Mueller's investigation were not immediately clear.
Rosenstein has also drawn heavy criticism from House Republicans for not recusing himself from overseeing the investigation, since he was involved in the FBI's investigation of the Trump campaign.
