The White House said Sessions resigned in a letter to Trump on November 7 and that the president had accepted his resignation as chief of the Justice Department - a move that immediately raised concerns from Democrats, who called for protection for the probe conducted by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
In a tweet Wednesday, shortly after Sessions' dismissal was announced, Toomey praised Sessions - who previously was one of his GOP Senate colleagues - and said he wants to see Trump nominate "a new Attorney General who is equally committed to the rule of law".
Sessions had recused himself from overseeing the investigation and that role had devolved upon the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein.
"The president wanted to take action as quickly as possible in the Mueller investigation, " said Sen.
He called on Whitaker to recuse himself from the Russian Federation probe because of previous comments about the investigation, echoing calls from other top Democrats. Mitt Romney, who just won election to the U.S. Senate from Utah, also tweeted that the Mueller probe should be allowed to proceed "to its conclusion unimpeded".
When asked whether Whitaker would now assume control over the Mueller investigation, U.S. Justice Department spokesperson Sarah Flores said Whitaker would be "in charge of all matters" under the purview of the department.
Supporters of the investigation around the country argue that Whitaker, who was given oversight of the special counsel probe after Sessions was forced out, has already shown that he will impede the crucial investigation, and that Trump's move is clear evidence of obstruction of justice. Nadler and other Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee also sent letters to Whitaker and the top Republican on the committee, retiring Rep.

Trump had repeatedly criticized Sessions for recusing himself from any investigation into potential Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.
Toomey spoke at the Emmaus Public Library on Thursday during the opening of a new $1.3 million children's wing, and met with reporters afterward.
That left Rosenstein overseeing the investigation, and he named Mueller as special counsel.
CNN reports that Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi is also under consideration. He had frequently publicly castigated Sessions for recusing himself past year from the case.
"The president's actions have plunged the country into peril", the Democrats added.
