A wildfire that moved so fast that firefighters couldn't hope to stop it quadrupled in size Friday after destroying several thousand buildings and leveling much of a Northern California town of almost 30,000 people, authorities said.
Smoke from the Camp Fire is causing air quality problems all across Northern California.
Richardson estimates another 60,000 people will likely have to evacuate because the fire jumped USA 101 early Friday and is pushing toward the coast.
In a matter of hours, it became apparent how quickly the fires were moving due to dry conditions and strong winds in the region.

In Southern California, two fires burned near the town of Thousand Oaks with towering smoke clouds visible at the site of a mass shooting where a gunman killed more than a dozen people just hours earlier.
Not a single resident of Paradise can be seen anywhere in town after a lot of them fled the burning Northern California community that may be lost forever.
Reality TV star Kim Kardashian West, who lives just north of coastal Malibu in Calabasas, revealed on Instagram that she was forced to flee her home.
"I was frantic", she said.
"We had to drive through flames to make it out safely", she said.

The initiative drew bipartisan support , from the American Civil Liberties Union to the Koch brothers-funded Freedom Partners . Florida was one of only a handful of states that permanently bars felons from voting unless they are granted clemency.

The fire is being driven west by 56km/h winds, fire officials said.
Authorities issued mandatory evacuation orders for tens of thousands of people in the scenic area in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains, including some residents of Chico, population 93,000, near Paradise.
As of Friday morning, evacuation centers were set up at Thousand Oaks High School, at 2323 North Moorpark Road; the Borchard Community Center at 190 Reino Road in Newbury Park; and Camarillo Community Center at 1605 Burnley St.
Part of the Paramount Ranch, in Agoura Hills, was also destroyed by the fires; the ranch is a historic Hollywood filming location, dating back to the 1930s but most recently used as the setting for the HBO series Westworld.
Paradise, located on a ridge, has limited escape routes.
"Fire is now burning out of control and heading into populated areas of Malibu", the city said in a statement online. He said he thought he could save her house, but they would only watch helplessly as their home burned.
A spokesman for the hospital operator, Dignity Health, reportedly told Action News Now that Feather River was later destroyed.
A nurse called Rita Miller at about 7 a.m. Thursday, telling her she had to get her disabled mother, who lives a few blocks away, and flee Paradise immediately.
Others described watching flames consume their property as they evacuated.
The blaze adds to what is already one of the worst fire years ever in California.
