Day had a sterling reputation as a college assistant at Temple, Boston College, New Hampshire and Florida and in the National Football League as quarterbacks coach for the 49ers and Eagles when Chip Kelly was their head coach before coming to OSU in 2017.
A report issued by an investigative committee left a lasting stain, detailing behavior by Meyer that could have taken down a coach of lesser stature.
When discussing the expectations at Ohio State, Day said the top one is to "win the rivalry game", followed by winning "every game after that". And, of course, Meyer beat hated rival MI all seven times he faced them, including the last three with Jim Harbaugh as head coach. That class was signed 30 days after Florida won its first National Championship under Meyer with a championship game win over, ironically, Ohio State. From Utah to Florida and finally with Ohio State, Meyer displayed a level of excellence and consistency that can only be matched by Saban. He has a 54-4 record in Big Ten games and has won three national championships - one at Ohio State and two with the Florida Gators. I had a really good session with our players about how they felt about Ryan Day and over the last month I did my own assessment of that, talking to support staff.
Former players were full of praise for Meyer.
Former Patriots cornerback Brandon Browner sentenced to 8 years in prison
Browner was an original member of the Seahawks' Legion of Boom secondary, spending three seasons with the Seahawks from 2011-13. The site reported that in exchange for the pleas the robbery, burglary and false imprisonment charges were dropped.
Meyer said leaving would have been more hard if the program wasn't healthy. And in his last year at Ohio State, he'd gotten a pay bump from $6 million per year to $7.6 million.
"When recruits started asking me if I will be here in four or five years", Meyer said during a press conference about factors that pushed him toward making a decision.
Former Buckeyes linebacker Joshua Perry says in a tweet that aside from his parents, Meyer was "one of the most influential people to touch my life". He's a second-year Ohio State assistant who had never before been a head coach. He's got nothing more to prove on the field, and he's never going to prove to his detractors that he is a different person than they think he is. The university cited that lapse in suspending Meyer for three games after an investigation. Day coached the team in Meyer's absence. I wouldn't be surprised if there's minimal coaching turnover in Columbus this year to ease the transition and offer some continuity for the first-year head coach.
Meyer previously stepped down as head coach at Florida for health reasons.
