Guwahati: The BJP Monday expressed sadness over its ally AGP deciding to break the partnership over the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, saying the regional party had "fallen into the Congress trap".
In Assam's Golaghat and Dibrugarh districts, protesters attempted to vandalise BJP offices, leading to the arrest of 14 persons in Dibrugarh and four in Golaghat, police said.
"The beneficiaries of Citizenship Amendment Bill can reside in any state of the country".
A proposed law to give citizenship to non-Muslims from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan was passed by Lok Sabha today amid vigorous dissent by several opposition parties, including the Congress and the Left Front.

The Bill aims to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955, to make illegal migrants who are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan eligible for citizenship of India.
