AirPlay 2 support will be available on Samsung Smart TVs in 190 countries worldwide. AirPlay 2 will allow users to stream content from their iPhone or iPad to their TV to enjoy things like playing videos, or even music, podcasts, etc. The iTunes app will give users access to their existing library and, more importantly for Apple, allow them to browse and rent or purchase movies and TV shows from the iTunes Store. The former two of those three outsell the Apple TV on the U.S. market, and unless Apple plans to drop the price on their Apple TV, they'll want those customers to have easy access to their forthcoming streaming service.
Still, a deal with Samsung is even more interesting, as the giant smartphone makers have a complicated history.
The Apple iTunes and AirPlay 2 support will be available on their 2019 models beginning this Spring (sometime between March to June) while the 2018 models will get it later via a firmware update. In recent years Apple has taken steps to wean itself off Samsung by developing its own future screen technology and device processors.
Mississauga teen Bianca Andreescu goes on to the tour final
Germany's Julia Goerges came back from a set down on Friday to beat Bouchard for a spot in the tournament semifinals. She admitted she was tense. "I've actually had this cough for three weeks now so I'm used to it", Andreescu said.
Two of tech's biggest rivals are working together: Apple and Samsung partnered to make it easier for people to watch iTunes content. Hopefully, this means at least with AirPlay LG TVs will support Apple's new streaming services. Apple CEO Tim Cook said last week in his revised outlook that services generated $10.8 billion in fiscal Q1 and that Apple plans to double the size of its service business from 2016 to 2020. However, with dwindling revenues and iPhone sales, the company is looking for more ways to earn money through its bouquet of services.
The Samsung iTunes deal follows on from the recent partnership with Amazon to bring Apple Music streaming to Amazon's Echo smart speakers.
The company had a reported $1bn budget for original content a year ago, and has a few original shows available for Apple Music subscribers, including James Corden's Carpool Karaoke, and Planet of the Apps, a Dragons' Den-style programme in which budding developers pitch their software to Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Alba, will.i.am and the YouTuber Gary Vaynerchuk.
