New measles cases confirmed in Texas, Washington

The agency says global travelers returning from Israel and Ukraine-where large outbreaks recently occurred-appear to be spreading the measles in the United States. Already in 2019, we're on our way to our sixth case in Texas.

Clark County also reported three new exposure sites, all of which are medical facilities in Vancouver - the Vancouver Clinic Salmon Creek, the Sea Mar Medical Clinic Salmon Creek and the Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center Emergency Department.

And, the Pan American Health Organization, the World Health Organization and other news sources reported significant increases in measles cases during the week ending February 2, 2019.

"Vaccination is the most effective way to prevent measles", Dr. Matt Richardson, director of public health, said in a news release.

Measles is an airborne disease which is highly contagious but it is preventable. A New York Department of Health official confirmed to ABC News last week that there were 30 confirmed cases to date in New York so far this year, and 122 confirmed cases in 2018.

At least 5 measles cases have been reported in Harris, Montgomery and Galveston Counties.

Measles is a viral infection that causes a rash over the entire body. Symptoms are a high fever, runny nose, cough, sore throat and red, watery eyes followed by a rash breakout three to five days after symptoms begin. The measles vaccination, MMR, protects against measles, mumps and rubella. Officials say they had stayed at home and in contact with health officials.
