Nissan Motor Co. said Tuesday it will withdraw its luxury Infiniti brand from markets in Western Europe in early 2020, while ceasing production of Infiniti models at its British plant amid fierce competition from German rivals. As a result the Q30 auto and QX30 sports-utility vehicle will no longer be made in the UK.
Fingers crossed, as the next X-Trail's just been pulled from Sunderland's portfolio, too. That reversed a decision announced two years ago after Prime Minister Theresa May's government offered some 60 million pounds in incentives.
Sales of Infiniti cars in the United Kingdom have been poor since it launched in 2008, with just 16 vehicle registrations last month and a total of 750 in the whole of 2018, representing 0.03% of the market, according to figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
Some 250 people work on production of Infiniti models in Sunderland, out of a total of around 7,000.
Last year, Nissan's deliveries of Infiniti vehicles plunged 34 percent to just 10,958 units. Infiniti will begin to wind down its operations later this year.
Infiniti retail operations are to remain operational until a tailored transition plan is put in place for continued aftersales services, including vehicle servicing, maintenance and warranty repairs.
It said Infiniti cars would be electrified from 2021, while high-polluting diesel-powered models will be discontinued in response to strong consumer and regulatory demand for cleaner transport.
'We will also be seeking assurances on future employment levels and the production of other models at Sunderland'.
"In the coming weeks Unite will be working closely with Nissan to protect jobs and ensure that redeployment is carried out in an open and transparent way". The company said it hopes to find alternative opportunities for these workers.
